The Marriage Bed: Ever Heard of Asian Platform Beds?

by DIY wedding planner on May 23, 2012

Hurdles upon hurdles will present themselves as you decide to join your life with the life of your loved one in the sacred sacrament of marriage. Even just moving in with your significant other can present problems for many. One of the biggest issues that people have is the feeling that your sense of personal space is clashing with that of your new love. How do we avoid or eliminate this problem?

Your significant other is in love with the idea of Asian platform beds, but you want something with a full foot board and headboard made of wrought iron and stained hardwood. A clash of styles is the most common form of personal space issues in relationships. The simplest solution I can offer you is to divide the number rooms evenly and give an even number to each person in the relationship to do with as they please. Communal spaces should have a design that everyone has agreed upon. This may be a daunting task if your sense of style is drastically different, but it’s possible with discussion and compromise.

Keep it simple. Elaborate designs and over the top pieces of furniture make it much more difficult to find a middle ground. The most extreme example of this would be a person who wants to have a theme house filled with everything Hello Kitty. Most guys are not going to feel comfortable sleeping on a platform bed in which they are snuggled up in Hello Kitty bedding. Avoid themes, extreme designs and extremely gender specific items. I am not saying that a man can’t love Hello Kitty and that all women must. I’m just saying that it’s unlikely and it will be easier to make compromises with a simple design.

The most important advice I can give you, talk about everything. If you have a problem with a design, express that problem from the start and try to do so without any comments against your partner. Everyone is allowed to have their own tastes and taste that are different than yours are not automatically wrong and stupid. They are just different and being made to feel that your opinion is stupid will never make you feel like compromising. So, don’t do that to someone you love.
