Get a wedding planner or do it yourself??

I realize that it would be cheaper to do it myself but I have never done this before will I forget a bunch of stuff?? I get stressed out really easily… My BF has already brought this point up to me… How much is the average wedding in Canada for 150 people?

The average wedding cost in the US is approximately 38,000. Do you have that kind of dough? How far is it yet till the wedding? Go to your local bride store and get a wedding planning book and figure out what you want before you decide what to do. Using that wedding planner book you can then start getting estimates on how much everything will be. It will help in your decisions. Also you can always get an appointment with a wedding planner after you figure out all what you want and ask him for his estimate before deciding what to do…..Best of Luck

If you have the budge for it I would definitely releave myself of the stress and headaches of organising a wedding. Just make sure you’re clear about what you want and the planner will be able to make suggestions, clean up messes and demand things on your behalf, leaving you to pamper yourself, sip champagne, try on dresses and enjoy the upcoming event!!! I don’t know how much it would cost but I hear the average small wedding can cost up to $10,000. The planner will be able to help you with a budget too.

I’d never hire a planner, it’s not really such a popular thing to do where I live to be honest and I wouldn’t have missed out on the planning for anything, we had the wedding that we wanted, not one that was the same as every other wedding the planner has done. It is a huge expense, if you have the money it could be useful but I’d rather spend that planners fee on an awesome honeymoon!! You can get a check list on most of the wedding websites, take your time, get family to help you and enjoy it!

We hired one and we absolutely love her. She really makes our lives easier. She helps us find vendors and keeps us on track. However, it is expensive… so if you have a tight budget, I wouldn’t recommend doing it.

There are “day of” wedding planners or “month of” wedding planners that are a bit cheaper. Those people don’t help you get your vendors set up, but they make sure that everything runs smoothly day of so that you don’t have to be working on your wedding day. You might want to consider doing that.

(BTW, I tend to get stressed out, which is part of the reason that we hired our planner.)

I’m not sure how much a wedding planner would cost in Canada but I can tell you that having a wedding planner has been a blessing for me and well worth the extra cost (which, by the way, is actually not really costing me that much more with the discounts she’s been able to get that I wouldn’t get on my own). This is a second marriage for both my fiance and I, neither of us feeling like we did things right the first time. The stress factor is so much lower than it was the first time around for me since someone else is taking over the difficult aspects. I basically have to coordinate a few things and make some decisions but the rest is taken care of.

My advice, have an idea of what you want from your wedding and a budget. Then interview a few planners. Most offer free consultations and can give you a written estimate of their costs and some can even give you an estimate for various facilities and vendors. Make sure you feel like you can work with the planner as you will be working closely together and you will want someone that will listen to you, not override you! Keep an open mind but don’t be afraid to put your foot down!

OK first of all you can totally do this yourself. There are so many websites out there that have checklists for you so you don’t forget anything. I planned a wedding in 3 months with no problem! And I managed to have a beautiful wedding with about 150-200 guests and I spent about $25,000. Remember, Friday weddings are cheaper. Trust me, it can be done. It helps if you have a little more time than 3 months so you don’t get stressed out.
I’ve had friends who’ve hired a wedding planner and they ended up spending a lot more on basic stuff than they could have. I say do it yourself. Get your mother, mother-in-law, and girlfriends to help you out and you will be fine!

Look into the brides magazines. Go to weddingchannel.com or theknot.com – - – all the websites (and often the magazines) have “to do” lists for the do-it-yourself types.

If you need to stick to a budget, you need to make a major decision at this time — do you shell out for the planner and skrimp somewhere else, or do it yourself and have the money to spend elsewhere???

One other thing is, can you find an affordable planner that will let you do some things yourself to save money.

I wouldn’t take back my experience planning my wedding for anything. We have tons of great memories from it. I’m really glad it wasn’t an option for us or we would have lost out. I did run across a website that is a great help when planning…my husband and I used it. It is completely free with e-mail reminders and you can customize it just for you.

My fiance and I are planning it ourselves, with the help of our families, and it’s going just fine. Using websites with solid checklists, like theknot.com or brides.com will help a lot.
I think it’s up to you, though. I am a very level-headed woman who isn’t easily stressed…so I am able to handle the sometimes tense situations that come with wedding-planning…if you fear you might get overwhelmed, then look into getting help. Even on your actual wedding day-some planners are able to give you different levels of assistance according to what you can afford. Good luck!!
