I saw this adorable DIY cake topper of two little chicks:

Although, my fiancee and I would love to do a polar bear and penguin (inside joke of ours)… What do you suppose we use to shape them?

We did our own… but nothing crafty, lol. We actually used action figures. It was too cute and it really represented our personality.

First decide if you want an edible topper, or something to keep.

If you want an edible topper, you can make something from fondant icing (you can buy this is pre-coloured shades, or colour white easily enough) – though I suggest you practice as they can be a bit fiddly!

If you want something to keep, I agree with the first answer – FIMO! It’s like plastercine and easy to shape and you simply bake it to set. It comes coloured already – you just warm in hands and you’re off.

Or, salt dough – it’s cheap to make and it easy to work with. You can glaze or colour after it’s baked.
