I need help with a wedding cake?

by DIY wedding planner on April 15, 2013

So, my brother and future sister in law asked me to make their wedding cake for them. The only problem is that I have a very basic knowledge of decorating. I know how to roll out fondant and things like that, but I have no clue on how to make decorations or anything for the cake. Are there any good online tutorials that would show me how to make their cake as awesome as they are?

Good for you and them. They asked cause they know you will do a good job. If you can’t master all those fancy flowers be a little creative. I can’t do flowers and stuff but I decorated my own cake. I did a solid typical around the cake border. It was a beach wedding and I went to the chocolate shop and got small colored shells to go around the bases. I got other shells to put on the sides with a different one for each layer(sand dollars, star fish) and topped it off with a combination of shells. You could take their cake and do something you know they love like a baseball, reading, or what the wedding theme is, classic( lace and edible pearls), outdoor (fresh seasonal flowers in a cascade up the sides) incorporate their colors in it. Even if you do master those flowers I hoe this helps you in your design.

Buy a wedding cup cake stand of the type you like the best, and make cupcakes instead, and use decorations to pull it all together.

If you can cover it with fondant you can add a ribbon band to cover the bottom edge (I love grossgrain with tiny polka dots) in their wedding color and cover the seams with sugar flowers. Go to etsy.com and search for “sugar flowers for wedding cakes”. You will see dozens of sellers that can mail you beautiful sugar flowers that you can add as decoration in all sizes, colors and prices. You can also use organic flowers (wrap the stems in plastic before adding them to the cake). Another easy decoration is to cut shapes or initials out of the leftover fondant with cookie cutters.

a simple 3 tier cake with an array or drape of sugar flowers hat match the bridal bouquet always looks stunning, you can take short courses on the in your local adult learning centre (assuming you live in the UK) and they only cost £10. if you dont have the time or just cant be bothered with it, search ”how to suger flowers” on youtube, ive seen TONNES of brilliant tutorials there, just do NOT watch any from a channel called ”expertville” there absolute RUBBISH, EVERYTHING i have ever seen from them from cake decourating to DIY, beauty and nails to laying flooring, is the biggest, worst pile of rancid, fementing horse crap i have EVER seen in my life! yes, i hate them that much!!

hope it goes well =)

That was rude of them to ask you. Why would they do that? Not only will you be stressing out over how to make it, but it will not be cheap for you to make it either. Why don’t you just be honest with them and tell them that even though you’d love to help them out, you just don’t have a clue how to make a wedding cake.
