I need ideas for decorations for an outdoor wedding?

by DIY wedding planner on December 8, 2011

The colors are black & white and the wedding is in the mountains at a private home. I need some good inexpensive diy ideas for decorating. I have already got the basic candles and twinkle lights covered. Help!

I guess it depends on what type of decorations you are looking for. Are we talking centerpieces, flowers, wall “daglies”?

Centerpieces idea: Find a wrapping paper you like. Cut out cardboard circles ( or squares, or ovals, whatever) and wrap them in the wrapping paper. Place these on the center of the tables with the candles on top. You can even stack multiple layers with varying paper patterns. Or place a vase of flowers on top. You can get creative here.

Our wedding reception will be outside in our backyard as well. It’s already landscaped beautifully, so doing too much as far as decorating would be silly and overkill. So if you already have lots of trees/flowers/lawns etc, you don’t need to do much. Definitely do white lights (Christmas lights). Our florist gave us the great recommendation of just simply “tossing” the strings of lights over the fence instead of stapling them or attaching them in straight lines. Also, we’ll be putting a big post or pole in the middle of the yard to make a “tent” of lights.

So in summary…other than lights and the decorations you’ll have on the tables, I wouldn’t do anything else.

White Kalanchoe in pots that the guests can take home are a nice touch.

My favourite thing for decorating outside is tying streamers to a tree – it fills out your space and looks beautiful.

Another pretty idea I saw at a wedding was having parasols (in your case, black and white) given out to all the female guests – this made for gorgeous photo ops and was a nice gift to the guests.

Other suggestions: chair decorations (e.g. ribbons), a ceremony arch, decorated table “stations” to fill out the space (a beverage station, guest book table, etc).

Make sure that everything is securely fastened in place in case of wind.

Outdoor weddings can be so beautiful and are always highly personalized.

I had an outdoor wedding and used tulle and ribbon to decorate. It was easy to do, inexpensive and looks really pretty in our pictures.

Wedding Arbors are great for outdoor weddings – a white wedding arbor will fit perfectly with a black and white theme http://www.yardenvy.com/vinyl-arbor.asp , and you can string white lights throughout or around the arbor. You can also use rose net lights http://www.christmaslightsetc.com/p/Cream-Rose-Net-Lights-with-Clear-Lamps–19248.htm for bushes and starlight spheres http://www.christmaslightsetc.com/starlight-sphere-outdoor-christmas-decor–108.htm from trees and such. The spheres are beautiful, and the clear will work well for a wedding.
