What do you think of this wedding favour idea?

by DIY wedding planner on December 12, 2011

I know we don’t have to do wedding favours, but we really like the idea and want people to have something to remembering the wedding and the date.

We havent found any good ideas for favours that people would actually use, but I came up with an idea this morning.

The wedding ceremony/reception will be in December so I was thinking of getting plain and simple undecorated Christmas Balls and painting the outside a matte Black and in Electric blue writting put our names and the date of our wedding. So they can put it on their tree everyyear and remember [if they want to no obligation]

what do you think? I really want to do a DIY type wedding.

Does it sound like a weird idea?

i dont know whose giving people thumbs down, but stop. [its not me, im not level 2]

yah i was thinking, either black with blue writting or blue with black writting
either way you know? those are our two colours for the wedding

hmmm good point. should we just do it one per couple?

yah itll be time consuming, but ill need something to do when hes at work [airforce] and im at home doing nothing [wont be able to work til i get my permanent residece card]. which is why i would love to do a DIY wedding ill have the time and it sounds fun :)

I think it’s a wicked cute idea! Although, I’m not sure people will want a black ornament. I know those are your colors, so maybe do a blue ball with black writing?

that sounds nice but keep in mind the cost of individual boxes for each guest to put these ornaments in. well I guess each guest doesn’t need an ornament- you can do one per couple if you tag them with each couples’ names at the table where they get their seating place card. I saw that done at a wedding recently, then it’s a combo place card & favor in one. you’re going to paint all those balls tho? do you know caligraphy? sounds like a very time consuming project.

I think it’s a great idea. However if I were doing it, I think I’d put something that symbolizes it. Like a picture of the flower I used or something.

I also think it would look prettier in reverse. Paint it electric blue and write in black your names and date.

i think the idea is cute if you are having a small ceremony. after you paint 50 balls, you aren’t going to want to do 50 + more. it will get really old really fast.

You can buy the ornaments in blue or black already and then you just need to personalize them. It’s much easier than buying plain ones and painting them a color. And if you use shatterproof balls they will be less fragile:

Good luck!

I love the idea, it’s original and cute.

I know my family keeps just about any christmas ornament that has ever been given to them lol

It would be nice to be given a favor that isn’t completely useless!

Though, I would buy them either already black or already electric blue and then paint on your names. I’ve tried to decorate plain ones before, and if you don’t use the right kind of paint they can end up looking tacky. Just a thought :)

It’s a cute idea but how many people, besides your parents, are going to want a Xmas ball with your name on their tree? The best wedding favors are edible. Not to be rude but no one really needs any more little do-dad things in their home. Little boxes of cookies or candy work for me

I really like it!

I think that sounds like a good, creative idea. Maybe the ornaments could be placed in a cute decorative bowl on the tables, and whoever wants can just take one.

We were also confused on what to give, so we decided to give the guys chocolate cigars (or real ones) and the girls were given rose quartz crystals which were wrapped in organza bags. We just bought the organza by the meter and made the bags ourselves. (a lot cheaper than buying them)

I think it is really going to put people “on the spot” as they are forced into a choice between keeping and displaying something not of their own choosing OR risking having you find out that your gift isn’t being displayed and possibly having hurt feelings. Just as a general rule, it’s not the best idea to give a person a the sort of gift where the use to which the recipient puts the gift will be obvious to the giver. I know that when I go out of town I often bring along a “Salvation Army Box” of gifts that I have no earthly use for but wouldn’t want the giver to see on sale at the thrift store.

Is there something you could give that is obviously meant to be used only once or used up, so that recipients don’t feel like they have to scramble to get your “little keepsake” out of the attic and put in on display whenever you are expected?

I agree with Sabine. It’s a cute idea but at the same time, most people aren’t going to want a Christmas ornament with your names and wedding date on them. I’m not a big fan of favors that are THAT personalized and I think most people would agree.
Why don’t you try something else that’s DYI? Or, you can buy plain Christmas balls and paint them different colors, or paint them in your wedding colors and draw different designs on them. That way, people will always remember that the ornaments came from your wedding (extra cute since it’s around Christmas time) but it won’t be perceived as tacky as having your names/date on them.

Good luck and congrats!
